I have a DVD player now, it replaced my old CD player. That CD player I sold to a junk shop. I understand they're gonna gut it of metals like copper,  aluminum, and  steel and turn the rest  over to a landfill.

Lots of the things we through away people can make money on by salavaging the internal metal parts. But they need to have large quantities of them coming in. I know one company that strips old broken geysers. Some of the old ones can contain a large amount of copper. But they also strip cables, computers etc.

Like i said this is a good operation if you are able to get the quantity of scrap through.

     Hi!

Some rechargeable battery and printer manufacturers are actively campaigning for and offering incentives for the return of their used products. If electronic companies will  adopt a similar strategy and set-up collection centers in communities, a steady stream of broken appliances could support a salvaging business. :)

I sometimes mod old hardware to turn it into something cool (change the case for something science fiction themed, for example) and sometimes just give it away.  Even older stuff can find a good home amongst friends looking for something extra to put in their guest room, etc.  Just because it isn't the latest and greatest, doesn't mean that it isn't useful for someone.

I've never done anything like repair electronic appliances like DVD players but I did put together a PC from several broken units. Really just a matter of slapping together the different modules. They make nice educational toys for kids, especially with Edubuntu. :)
