Recycling Plastic Bag Laws in California

The story can be read here: http://www.bizjournals.com/eastbay/stories/2007/07/02/daily9.html "The new law, AB 2449, requires drugstores and grocery stores of at least 10,000 square feet to offer at-store recycling programs for plastic bags. Some stores already had accepted the bags for recycling before the law went into effect." I think thats pretty good. I'm moving to California soon, but I'd with they'd do it here in Michigan too. Any opinions?

We British appear to be further ahead than you Americans, then. I remember at University, as students we demanded that the University provided recycling bins for all our recyclable rubbish. They were actually procrastinating for some inexplicable reason. They soon provided them when we began to kick up a fuss. It's just pure common sense to us, we're throwing away so much cardboard, paper towels and other recyclable material which could have been going to good use, instead we were being reduced to throwing it in the standard bin and therefore merely ending up at a waste disposal depot to be dropping into a landfill.

Are Canadians very behind then? We Canadians have not started demanding plastic bag recycling; we try to focus on bottles and cans.

Most welcome law. About time something's got to be done with all those plastic bags. We have a local chain where we are charged extra for the shopping bag, which is also one size and enough for 2 bags of flour to fit. This encourage shoppers to bring along used bags instead.

The new California law, AB 2449, sponsored by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D–Van Nuys) requires certain grocery stores and retail pharmacies with more than 10,000 square feet of retail space to provide at-store recycling programs for plastic carryout bags. In addition, the Plastic Bag Recycling Act of 2006 requires that certain grocers and pharmacies provide bins for the collection of plastic bags brought back by customers for recycling. Grocery stores and retail pharmacies are responsible for the collection, transportation and recycling of plastic carryout bags returned to their stores.
